Major EU Regulatory Changes Are Coming in 2026

The European Union is introducing major regulatory changes that will affect importers from 2026 onward. The new CBAM and EUDR frameworks will require stricter documentation, new compliance steps and earlier preparation. Here’s what importers need to know — and what actions you should already be taking.

At BTS Logistics, we believe in staying ahead of change, not reacting to it. And 2026 will bring two significant EU regulations that will directly impact importers: CBAM and EUDR. These changes will influence your compliance requirements, your documentation flow, and your lead times at the border.

What importers need to prepare now
New rules like CBAM and EUDR are complex, and the responsibility lies with importers to ensure complete, accurate, and compliant documentation. This includes:
– Verifying origin, production steps, certificates, emissions data and supply-chain information
– Reviewing the correct product and commodity codes
– Preparing all required registrations in the EU systems
– Building a complete, compliant dossier ahead of 2026

CBAM – What changes per 1 January 2026?
CBAM enters a new phase. Key takeaways:
– Importing more than 50 tons per calendar year? Full CBAM obligation applies. Below 50 tons?
– Exemption applies (except for electricity and hydrogen).
– A CBAM registration number becomes mandatory — without it, your goods cannot be cleared.

To avoid delays, additional costs or blocked shipments, make sure your customs partner receives either:
– Your CBAM registration number
– The reference number of your registration request
– A confirmation that you remain below the 50-ton threshold (per EORI, per year)

Now is the time to:
– Apply for your CBAM registration
– Monitor your yearly import volumes
– Share your registration details with your contact person
– Update invoices with CBAM data
– Prepare internal documentation for 2026

EUDR – More time, but not less important
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is still in motion and expected to be postponed. While it is not yet applicable, it will eventually affect products involving commodities such as cattle, soy, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber and timber. This added time gives companies the opportunity to prepare calmly and strategically. Start by identifying:
– Which products may fall under the future EUDR scope
– What level of transparency your suppliers can provide
– What traceability data is available
– Whether your organization is ready for a future due-diligence obligation

For now, CBAM requires the immediate focus. EUDR should be monitored and prepared for — without urgency, but with intention.

Need clarity or support? A smooth import process starts with the right preparation. If you’re unsure which obligations apply to your products or how to prepare, get in touch with us. At BTS Logistics, we stand beside our partners to navigate these changes with confidence, accuracy and speed. 2026 is around the corner. Let’s get ready — together.
